THE METHOD

The Montessori method is an approach to education in which children are given the freedom to explore an environment designed to meet their developmental needs.  Through the teacher's preparation of the environment, careful observation, and individual program planning, each child is encouraged to become involved in concrete sensory-motor learning experiences.  For over 75 years this method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori through her scientific  observations of children at work, has helped youngsters achieve their fullest potential.  They grow in independence and self-discipline.  Children are encouraged to work at their own pace.  The result is a love of learning and a spontaneous, insatiable curiosity children carry with them for life.

OUR PROGRAMS

The Stella Montessori Program offers an educational curriculum for children from 3 to 5 years.  Stella’s teachers are Certified by the  American Montessori Association.  This unique program teaches students respect for others’ work and development of social skills by allowing them freedom to work independently and learn at their own pace.  Programs include physical education, art and music for all students.  In addition, other programs offered include library, computers, ballet, and foreign language for children in their kindergarten year.  Optional programs available are dance, swim and Wee Parlez, an intro to French for the very young.

OLDER TODDLER

Morning Session:      8:30-11:30 a.m.

                                    All day to 3:00 p.m.

Toddlers explore their specially prepared environment with the guidance of the Montessori teachers and are given the opportunity to follow their natural inclination to gather and absorb information.  They learn the beginning skills of cooperation and self-reliance and are introduced to appropriate Montessori and other Early-Childhood materials.  We feel this class for 3 year olds gets our youngest students off to a great start!

PRE-PRIMARY

Session:                     8:30-3:00 p.m.

The environment designed for 4 year olds is created to take advantage of the child’s sensitive periods.  Dr. Montessori recognized these periods as times when children have an intense interest in acquiring a particular skill.  Exploring the classroom areas of math, language, sensorial and practical life, the children grow, each achieving his/her own special potential.

KINDERGARTEN

All Day Sessions:      8:30-3:00 p.m.

In the program, 5 year olds move into the abstract world of ideas and concepts at their own pace.  Their “explosion” into learning continues at this stage when all their previous knowledge suddenly fits together.  Further reinforcement of basic skills helps students take on the academic challenges which prepare them for the first grade.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Afternoons:                3:00-5:00 p.m.

Children are supervised in a warm, loving atmosphere with activities different from those of a regular classroom.

OUR ENVIRONMENT

Although the Montessori Program is designed to meet the needs of children from 3 to 5 years of age, it is accomplished in a multi-age environment that encourages interaction, inclusion and shared learning.  The benefit of this approach is the learning that takes place between different age groups such as: leadership skills and modeling.

IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR PROGRAM

Stella’s Montessori Program is now able to meet the needs of all children 3 to 5 years of age for a full-day program.  This represents a significant enhancement that allows Stella to be on the cutting edge of Montessori education. The children also benefit from four teachers by receiving different perspectives and life experiences in a large, more flexible physical environment.

All children have the opportunity to participate in art and music classes.  We are giving our youngest children a broader academic experience and a greater exposure to the larger school community.

We have also designed a special room where younger children who need to nap or rest can do so under the supervision of one of our teachers.

Stella Niagara Education Park is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity and is a private, co-educational, Catholic school for Montessori and Kindergarten through eighth grade.  Stella is part of a continuing tradition of educational excellence begun in 1908 by the Sisters of St. Francis.  Stella Niagara is committed to an educational program that involves and is focused on the development of the whole child.  The school is located along the banks of the Niagara River in Lewiston, New York.  Its spacious classrooms, attractive dining hall, private playgrounds, large gym and inviting auditorium provide  an excellent educational environment for students.
