Science Fair

Stella Parent Partnership (SPP)

Student Handbook

December, 2004

Dear Teacher,

This year’s Niagara County Science Fair will take place on April 16, 2005 from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. This event is sponsored by Stella Niagara Education Park, the Environmental Leadership Institute at Niagara University, the Niagara County Environmental Fund and the New York Power Authority.

We are looking for projects from 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Students may participate as school science fair winners representing their school or may enter as individuals who have an interest in science. Although most students participate through their schools or teacher, this is not the only way for a student to become involved. Teachers OR parents may sponsor a children participating in this science fair. We encourage ALL students who enjoy science to become involved. If any child who would like to become involved is in need of a project mentor, several knowledgeable scientists have volunteered their time and are willing to assist any student needing help.

The following guideline will give you an idea of the expectations for participants:

Students in grades 5 – 6 may enter in teams of 2 or 3, or as individuals. Students should do the work on the projects. Parents and others may advise, encourage, inspire, and even demonstrate how to do something. The students must construct and perform the projects themselves. Journals or log books, graphs and charts are also encouraged. Students should write a one to two page summary of their project to show and use when talking to the judges. Projects are presented informally and students discuss their findings with the judges. Before the science fair date, students should review their projects and practice their presentation skills.

Grade 7 and 8 students enter lecture demonstration projects. These are formal presentations of the work completed while conducting their science fair project. Original work is encouraged. A lecture demonstration is scored primarily on the student’s presentation, knowledge of subject material, and answers to judges’ questions.

These guidelines are restated in a letter to parents informing them about the 2005 Niagara County Science Fair and on the science fair registration form. Parent letters, science fair student information packets, and a presentation for students addressing the value of participating in science fairs are all available to the science teachers upon request. Simply contact the Stella Niagara school office with your request at 754-4314 or e-mail ncsf2005@yahoo.com.

Please consider having your students become involved in the "2005 Niagara County Science Fair." It is an enjoyable, educational and worth-while experience for all who participate.

Sincerely,

Niagara County
